Chapter 6. Formation of mixed derivatives of polyfunctional compounds

Chapter Summary: Various methodological approaches can be applied to the chemical transformation of compounds containing multiple functional groups. Protection or modification of all polar groups, with the aid of appropriate common derivatisation methods, is the most common approach. In this case, successive employment of suitable reactions, which are selective to particular groups, gives rise to mixed derivatives. The application of some of these approaches to particular types of multi-functional compounds is considered in this chapter.
