Chapter 3. Alkylation (arylation)

Chapter Summary: This chapter reports various chemical and mass spectral characteristics of alkylation (arylation) as another common type of derivatisation. This modification procedure involves the replacement of a hydrogen atom in carboxylic acids, sulphonic acids, alcohols and phenols, mercaptans, primary and secondary amines, amides and N-substituted amides, sulphonamides and CH-acids (of the type RCO – CH2 – COR′) by an alkyl (or aryl) group.
