Chapter 1. Silylation

Chapter Summary: Silylation is the most versatile derivatisation technique available for modification of various polar groups including alcohols, phenols, amines, acids, mercaptans etc. This chapter discusses silylation as the simplest and most versatile derivatisation method. Only those examples are described where silylation is the sole procedure. Approaches involving silylation for preparing mixed derivatives or for step-wise modification are considered in subsequent chapters. It is not possible to cover all the material present in the literature on the use of silylation in mass spectrometry. It was not considered necessary because there are many undobtedly useful papers that describe the application of similar approaches to functionally related compounds and do not introduce any significantly new methodology.
